Debs, Eugene Victor
(1855-1926) Дебс, Юджин Виктор
Один из признанных лидеров рабочего движения начала XX в. В 1875 стал секретарем местного отделения Братства паровозных машинистов [Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen], в 1893 организатором и президентом Американского союза железнодорожников [American Railway Union (ARU)]. Организатор забастовок. В связи с поддержкой железнодорожниками стачки рабочих заводов Пульмана был осужден на полгода тюремного заключения. За это время познакомился с социалистической литературой и в 1897 приступил к организации Социал-демократической партии и позднее Социалистической партии [Socialist Party]. В 1905 был одним из организаторов профобъединения "Индустриальные рабочие мира" [Industrial Workers of the World]. Пять раз был кандидатом в президенты от Социалистической партии, в 1912 и в 1920 собрал около 1 млн. голосов. В выборах 1920 принимал участие, отбывая срок наказания за антивоенную агитацию. Был освобожден в 1921.
